A little spoiled by the romance plot it could have done without, which left less space for character development.

Splendid book. Rich, believable setting. Interesting, rounded characters. I love that the action-adventure duo are also all worried about Doing the Right Thing. Now this is what a steampunk novel should be. Lovely clanking inventions, a consistent system of magic that avoids the Q Problem, high suspense, and great fun all round.
