From a December 10, 2025 report in TechCrunch:

Amazon says it will allow authors to offer their DRM-free e-books in the EPUB and PDF formats through its self-publishing platform, Kindle Direct Publishing. Starting on January 20, 2026, authors who set their titles as DRM-free will see their books made available in these more open formats.

I found this story in Pixy Misa’s Daily News Stuff post for December 11, 2025 and I agree that this move by Amazon is “for the better” (not the first time I have agreed with Amazon in recent weeks). While the Kindle store will never be a DRM-free friendly establishment on the whole, I approve of Amazon offering non-proprietary publishing format options for authors who publish to Amazon without DRM protections. With that being said, the change makes little practical difference to me since my PocketBook …

From January 20th, 2026, released through Direct Publishing (KDP) without will be downloadable as or for users who have purchased them. It will also be possible for no-DRM status to be toggled for existing .

It remains to be seen how many authors and publishers will take advantage of this, whether the files will be watermarked, and if the feature will be available for non-KDP titles.

@malte@radikal.social Based on your needs for proofreading a 500-page book—strong support for adding comments (e.g., text notes, highlights), viewing an overview list of all annotations (like a sidebar), and efficient navigation—JOPDF(https://https://www.jopdf.com/) is among my top recommendations for upcoming Linux PDF reader. It focuses on native, completely free option where possible, prioritizing reliability with large files. You'll have to wait a little while over the available Linux version, but it won't be too long. #pdf #linux #mac #windows #freeware

This looks like an incredible deal, but why doesn't it come with the ePub format? I know Pearson usually offers ePubs via InformIT.
