So, a story about how I ... by force!

This story starts when I was working at for in IT Client Services. My job was "Special Projects". I worked for a director and basically made magic happen.

Early November 2014, someone from a human interface robotics lab handed me a new piece of called the . It was an upper armband with 8 myoelectric sensors that could measure electrical muscle function, and do stuff on a computer with that data! The base idea was that you could do the following: hand wave outward, inward, spread out, fist, and thumbs up.

So, being CrankyLinuxUser, I wanted a toolchain to get and do my …

Was trying a duckduckgo search for a restaurant in town, and I clicked on a link to read it, then came back to the search results. Suddenly a bunch of links disappeared and the first two links were now tripadvisor.

I selected hide site from these results and immediately a tripadvisor link from another url (different country) pops up. I kind of kept going and hiding about 15 results and new tripadvisor links kept popping up. This went on until "Search query entered was too long. Please shorten and try again."

So is this a bing-underneath thing, or direct enshittification of duckduckgo?

This is while using uBlockOrigin, but that didn't help, I didn't see any way that the ads differed from the normal links either.

This "Studio Ghibli" craze is a good example of how generative AI destroys (economic and cultural) value.

In a few weeks, when people get bored/sick of the memes, what would have become of the art style that those folks in Japan spent decades perfecting? And what does that mean for any future work they'll produce?

We've already seen this with several illustration styles, which have become synonymous with no-value AI slop even when drawn by a human hand.

I've reached this point where I know Big Tech is useless unless I can free it from corporate greed with Linux and GrapheneOS.

Big Tech is like digital colonialism, siphoning creativity and exploiting consumers for profit while deepening inequality. These corporations treat individuals as mere resources in their relentless pursuit of profit.

Platforms like TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and all those other platforms are just tools for Big Tech to exploit us. They're trash.

When will you stand up against their exploitation? Look at the harm they cause!

Imagine if a product's user messages were honest....

"This release, that you will eventually have no choice but to install, contains a shiny looking new thing that you certainly won't use but is designed to distract you from the removal of two rather popular interoperability features. The new install size is still much larger because we fired the lead developer who was standing in the way of us bloating the code with humongous and brittle third party libraries"

"We messed up (again!) and the software we supplied for you has a pretty crazy security vulnerability that puts your personal data at rush. This is due to its unnecessary over-complexity and our desperate need to rush things to market as quickly as possible"

"Congratulations on being part of our success. We now enjoy a large enough market share to begin "the squeeze". Customers looking to postpone (temporarily) the imminent and continuing …

So my Kia has an OTA updatable media/navigation system. Last year Kia decided that they could make some money on it, now they've finally introduced pricing: 100 EUR per year, so per 2 updates.

Last year's updates:
- enable OTA updates
- add new sounds of nature

ORLY? That's what you want to charge 100 EUR for? For an trivial update to an unusable navigation system, which has one main redeeming quality: it provides a decent hardware to run Android Auto on.

Oh and also the updates can be applied (freely, officially) from a USB drive.

Absolutely chuffed to hear that I'll be presenting at @bsidesseattle with my good friend Dr. Jon Martin @jon. He's the digital archivist for the University of Cambridge. We'll be talking about the creation of digital monasteries to preserve knowledge in this age of .

Knowledge exists, but it's retreating behind bullshit paywalls, subscriptions, and segmenting into "content" based on its format, instead of being freely circulated online. Jon and I will talk about the history of this new Digital Dark Age, organizations doing good work, and some TTPs to join the good fight!

Thrilled to see @adamshostack @wendynather keynoting, and folk like @MayaKaczorowski @deviantollam there as well!
