vietnamese-american chef who grew up mostly in Louisiana writes for an American audience. Creole x Vietnamese works really well - both areas colonized by the French so there's delightful crossover, like how ingredients/flavors in a po boy can work in a bahn mi and vice versa. Lots of pictures and stories, for example a recipe demonstrated three ways: how Grandmother makes it, how Mom makes it, and how the author does it. For #bloomscrolling I wanted to share the beauty of these #azalea bushes I encountered on my walk today in Downtown #BatonRouge. These are an old-fashioned variety growing in front of a historic home. #Azaleas are amazing right now, they always make #spring in the #south extra special. Most of the year they are just a shrub, but at this time they are glorious.

Today I saw these old style #camellias while walking in downtown #BatonRouge #Louisiana. I was struck by the rose like flowers. I thought they would be a good topic for #bloomscrolling. Since they are cultivated, they probably are #gardening material as well. Camellias are such great flowers, because they are evergreen and bloom in the late winter when little else is growing. #Bromeliad fans might notice a few sprigs of #Tillandsia growing on the stems of the bush.

For #FungiFriday I present this fallen branch that is covered in a striped bracket fungus that I believe is Turkey Tail #Fungus, Trametes versicolor. This photo was taken at Brooks Park in #BatonRouge #Louisiana on November 3, 2024.

In the foreground of the picture is a grey log, that has a crusting of grey lichen. Emerging from the wood are numerous bracket fungi that are striped tan and grey. These stripes resemble those on the tail of a turkey, thus this may be Turkey Tail Fungus, Trametes versicolor. In the background of the photo are green plants and some fallen brown leaves.

This past weekend, another great day bird banding in #BatonRouge with Louisiana Bird Observatory. Migrants are starting to trickle in.

All banding is being conducted under a federally authorized Bird Banding Permit issued by the U.S. Geological Survey’s Bird Banding Lab.

For #ThickTrunkTuesday I wanted to share this enormous old #liveoak #tree that has its own space by the Baton Rouge Clinic on Perkins Road in #BatonRouge #Louisiana. When the Clinic moved to this location, they preserved the tree and set aside an appropriately sized fenced area to protect its root system. The tree is thriving and so is the Clinic. Proof that we can live in harmony with nature if we do so thoughtfully. This oak supports an impressive colony of Resurrection Fern as well. I took these photos last week, and you can see the new spring growth on the branches.
