There's a sandwich place in downtown Pittsburgh called Primanti Brothers that's famous for putting the fries inside the sandwich (I've heard it's easier for truckers to eat while driving). So when Ortegas is talking about how they put fries inside the sandwiches on Purmantee III, well, that's why.

#StarTrekSNW's "What is Starfleet?" features a nice really really close close-up of Pike's uniform and insignia. Don't know what else to say, it looks cool! :-)

There are two Verilux SmartLight LED Floor lamps in Erica Ortegas' quarters in #StarTrekSNW's "What is Starfleet?". Thanks to the episode being broadcast in 4K, you can even make out the name "Verilux" on the lamp in the episode. ;-)

#StarTrekSNW's "What is Starfleet?" features many close-ups of the Enterprise crew's personal items. The photo(s) of Uhura's family can be seen really well in the episode, much better than in season 2's "Lost in Translation" (the episode that the photo was originally taken for).

We get a really good look at Spock's 2261 Vulcan lute in #StarTrekSNW's "What is Starfleet?"➡️. The comparison shot shows Spock's 2269 lute in #StarTrekTOS' "The Way to Eden"⬅️. I really want to compile screenshots of all the Vulcan lutes seen in almost 60 years of #StarTrek history!

Just finished re-watching Quality of Mercy. Now I think I need to re-watch TOS Balance of Terror again. Wow, Quality of Mercy is an excellent episode! I love how at the end of the episode, Pike has made his peace with his future, and just walks around the bridge being happy to see each member of his bridge crew, and happy to have the time with them that he has. That could be a good attitude for just about any of us. His conversation with Spock after coming back from the alternative future is great, with Spock putting the pieces together. I also really like this versio of Kirk. This also sort of puts another perspective on the opening episodes of Discovery, where Michael, who after all grew up with Spock, argues that there's no making peace with a different enemy and that Starfleet should shoot first, but her choice turns out to set off a war instead of preventing one. Anyway, I love this episode. It's the one where liking the series SNW really solidified for me. I do think Star Trek is wrong about fate in general, and relies too much on the idea of a person having a predetermined fate. That's funny, given how much the show celebrates leaders boldly making choices to make their own fates. #StarTrek #StarTrekSNW

Hyronalin(e) has been the go-to medication against radiation poisoning on #StarTrek since #StarTrekTOS' "The Deadly Years"⬆️. I was happy when it was back in #StarTrekSNW's "What is Starfleet?"⬇️. Even though Dr. M'Benga says "hydronaline" in the episode, the subtitles got it right! :-)

The riddle has already been solved: the vinyl album in Erica Ortegas' quarters in #StarTrekSNW's "What is Starfleet?" is "Irish Cowboy Country Blues" by Sean Fhéile. Melissa Navia's late husband Brian Bannon played on this album. This is such a sweet tribute!

Any help identifying the vinyl record in Erica Ortegas' quarters in #StarTrekSNW's "What is Starfleet?" would be greatly appreciated, as I've had no luck so far. It's prominently seen in her quarters, features a guitar player in a forest on the cover and seems to have been recordey by a "Sean".

So was the actual plot of this episode that Ortegas' brother learns that the military is good and nice, and that making military recruitment ads is what he should be doing? I would love to see Trek deal seriously with the question of just how military Starfleet is. There are still things I liked about this episode, and I try not to be negative or picky about anything Trek makes. Beto was nasty the first 2/3 of the episode, intentionally re-traumatizing everybody through his questions. Good for Pike for calling him on it. But the pro-military tone of the ending was pretty extreme. #StarTrek #StarTrekSNW #StrangeNewWorlds

I've been re-watching SNW, and this episode almost halted me in my tracks. I don't like slimy baby lizards crawling out of people, and I didn't want to see Hemmer die. Hemmer's death bothered me especially because we'd hardly met the character yet--he'd had speaking lines in how many episodes? And then they killed him with maximum emotion and a funeral with eulogies and all. I can believe the characters feel the emotions depicted, but I can't feel it myself, because we didn't even know the character. Then La'an poignantly asking permission to take a leave of absence, too. So much emotion for characters we don't know that well at this point. I really would have liked to have Hemmer around long enough to get to know the character, he seemed like a great character to include. I'm sure this is all real-world constraints on who's available when. OK, onward to episode 10, which I remember liking a lot more. #StarTrek #StarTrekSNW

I loved this episode--especially seeing Kirk face the fact that he's been acting like an immature, arrogant jerk. And then with Spock's coaching he turns it around and finds a way out of the impossible situation. Yes, this is the guy who re-wrote the Kobayashi Maru test rather than learning what everyone else was supposed to learn from it about failure sometimes being inevitable. It was good that by the end of the episode, Kirk wasn't just more arrogant than ever, he actually learned from the experience. I found all the stuff about leadership style interesting because just today I had to do a long quiz at work to determine how much I rely on what type of leadership style, normally vs. in a crisis. One of the four types was nicknamed "warrior." The questions on the quiz tied right in to the examples on the episode. (I found out I am not a warrior in normal times, but pick up on warrior-like-ness considerably in crisis, according to my responses.) I wished they had found a ship's log or a black box in the wreckage of the giant destroyer ship, s they could find out what happened. Is this just foreshadowing for some future episode? Or a warning about the potential of humanity to go wrong? #Startrek #StarTrekSNW
