Margalit Fox: The Riddle Of The Labyrinth (2013, Ecco) 3 stars

Review of 'The Riddle Of The Labyrinth' on 'Goodreads'

3 stars

An interesting book on a stash of writing discovered on Crete.  The book was divided in three sections, starting with the man who discovered the tablets and ending with the one who finally decoded them.  But the meatiest section belonged to the unheralded and nearly forgotten woman who, working evenings and weekends, did the grindingly hard work of analyzing and categorizing the symbols, and enabled the decryption.

As we followed each of the protagonists solve each piece of the puzzle, one step at a time, Fox clearly explained how they figured it out, and gave examples that showed the mechanics of a syllabic script.
