Frank Manchel: Terrors of the screen. (1970, Prentice-Hall) 4 stars

Discusses the history, techniques, characters, and plots of horror films from around the world.

Review of 'Terrors of the screen.' on 'Goodreads'

4 stars

Although published in 1970, the majority of movies discussed were from the 40’s and earlier. While it does date itself with references to contemporary releases and filmmakers, this was an informative, albeit brief, overview of early horror films, those that made them, and the impact they had on the industry. A great introduction to the subject for those with an afternoon to spare.

Joan Simon, Jane M. Gaines, Alison McMahan: Alice Guy Blaché (2009) 3 stars

Review of 'Alice Guy Blaché' on 'Goodreads'

3 stars

This book is a a companion to a 2009-‘10 exhibit on Alice Guy-Blaché curated by the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. While not a traditional biography, the collection of writings on Guy-Blaché by different authors chronicle her life prior to, during the height of, and later decline of her career as the first female filmmaker of the late 19th and early 20th century. While this book can be used as a formative introduction to Guy-Blaché, one might be more interested in her memoirs or a more traditional biography, both referenced by the authors, if looking for a cohesive narrative of her life. The works in this book are more tributes by respected authors offered for the occasion of the mentioned exhibit.
