I enjoy novels based on Chinese mythology, so I thought I would enjoy this one. I was sadly disappointed.

Don't get me wrong, the writing is beautiful and lyrical. It's just that the story and the characters are YA tropes. The MC is a Mary Sue with a side of pick-me-girl. The love interests are cardboard cutouts, to the degree that the obligatory twist at the end left me uninterested. I finished the book, because of the writing style, but I wish this story could have been told with depth and character growth that the author chose to omit. I'll give a pass on the sequel.
