Review of 'Washington Black' on 'Goodreads'

4 stars

I loved the voice of the protagonist; Esi Edugyan has created someone you're instantly engaged with, through the many twists and turns of his life. I enjoyed the multiple genres of this book as well; it leapt from slave narrative to arctic adventure to bildungsroman as deftly as anything I've read since Kavalier & Klay. But like that book, the final act begins to run out of steam; by the time the story ends in Morocco, I was disappointed that the story would end when and where it did in Washington Black's life. There was more to tell. Nevertheless, this was a terrific read.
