Ali Hazelwood: Love on the Brain (Paperback, 2022, Berkley)

Review of 'Love on the Brain' on 'Goodreads'

So everyone who says this is just Adam and Olive from The Love Hypothesis all over again is absolutely correct. A different iteration of very similar characters, with a slightly different villain and a bit of a different plot.

There are multiple things I actually like better about this version, though:
- I enjoy a heroine who's a little more mature, with less of a gap in experience and power (Adam and Levi are much the same age, but Bee is quite a bit older than Olive.)
- I really like the Marie Curie bit. More Marie Curie facts all the time, please. (I suppose I have to say this, currently being a Marie Skkodowska-Curie postdoctoral fellow, but it's also true.)
- The storyline is more over the top, higher stakes and consequently less realistic (at least the end), but I don t mind that. I like the hijinks.
- I love the snark. TLH has a bit, this has lots, and I am here for it.
- I like that the science itself has a bigger role in this story.

So while TLH always has a special spot in my heart as the first modern romance I read, I think this is overall the better version of that story. Yes, the writing has weaknesses, the whole giant Super-Male hunk thing is overdone, the characters both have unrealistic academic dream careers and are geniuses (I know those exist, but most of us in academia do not lead their own lab by age 28), and the villains are clichés (all true for TLH as well). I enjoy it anyway, for the reasons mentioned above.

That being said, I hope AH's next book can be about different characters with a different story. I'll continue cherishing these, of course.
