Naomi Novik: His Majesty's Dragon (2006, Del Rey Books)

The Temeraire series is my absolute favorite series. It is engaging and hilarious with a decent amount of historical knowledge included. Obviously this is a fantasized version of the Napoleonic Wars, but it prompted me to research battles, figures, and cultures around the world.

Over the course of this series, the narrative visits every continent except North America, exploring indigenous cultures and their resistance to colonial powers. Thanks to the inclusion of dragons in this world, pre-European societies continue to thrive well into the 1800s.

If you like fantasy, human cultures, dragons, military history, or historical fiction, this series should be top of your list!

Fantastic Magical Education book

The story does suffer from a lack of developed female characters. Most female characters fall into the Madonna/whore dichotomy, which may be a result of the protagonist's own opinions or the author's. It's a compelling and fun story, but be aware it is a sausage party.
