If this is what the Army was like 1941, I can't believe we won WWII. I was expecting a WWII novel and this technically fits the bill, but it was not all what I was expecting. Jones develops great characters who go through breakups and career set backs and are generally beaten by life. This could be half the length, but the dialogue fully develops the characters and that requires space.
