It's a complicated book with some internal inconsistencies based on emotional need, imo. His primary thesis is that everyone has racist tendencies, at the least, and that we all need to act to counter them, in ourselves and others, or our inaction is still racist. Yes, folks, ally is a verb. Cool. He also makes a clear distinction between racism and institutional racism, making sure to say that racist behavior in anyone is racist behavior, regardless of their skin tone. And that institutional racism must be fought on an institutional level, a la John Lewis. Cool. There was some emotional rambling around culture and societal acceptance that I had trouble following, but most of it seemed pretty solid. All in all, an excellent, thought provoking book.
