reviewed The Stolen Heir by Holly Black (The Stolen Heir Duology)

Holly Black: The Stolen Heir (Hardcover, 2023, Hot Key Books)

Dark fantasy with a great main character

I enjoyed the main character's complexity and strength. A terrific dark story, really hoping it doesn't get too mushy in the next book

reviewed Lords of Uncreation by Adrian Tchaikovsky (The Final Architecture, #3)

Adrian Tchaikovsky, Adrian Tchaikovsky (duplicate): Lords of Uncreation (Paperback, 2023, Tor Books)

He's found a way to end their war, but will humanity survive to see it?

A fitting end

Expertly wraps up the series with a satisfying ending. The baddies are suitably explained and our plucky band of heroes as heroic as they need to be.

I did find the multiple POV in the final showdown to be a distraction, something that didn't bother me at all in the rest of the series. But I really liked how all of the characters polt lines were resolved, very satisfying.

The whole trilogy was great with adventure, intrigue and imagination to spare.

Super imaginative story

Very ambitious and maybe doesn't hit the heights it was going for. One of those rare books with multiple story lines and characters that is not annoying or disjointed. A really imaginative story I enjoyed reading

reviewed Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree (Legends & Lattes, #1)

Travis Baldree: Legends & Lattes (Paperback, 2022, Tor Books)

Worn out after decades of packing steel and raising hell, Viv the orc barbarian cashes …

Gorgeous heartwarming story

I loved this gentle heartwarming story of a badass mercenary orc hanging up her sword and opening a coffee shop. There's plenty of great drama and characters and it's wonderfully written.

There's no big adventures or fighting or conspiracy but I love it for what it delivers. Similar vibe to The Goblin Emperor.

R.F. Kuang: Babel (EBook, 2022, HarperCollins UK)

The city of dreaming spires.

It is the centre of all knowledge and progress …

Coming of age anti-colonism fantasy

The story follows a Chinese boy pulled from his home and trained in the magic of translation to power silver ingots. As he matures, he questions his role in supporting the colonism that wrenched him from his home land.

It's well written, interesting and thought provoking read. It's not an escapist fantasy, and parts of it go into the day-to-day life of a scholar a bit too much for my taste. I enjoyed it but wouldn't recommend if you like your fantasy full of daring exploits and wizardly magic.

Adrian Tchaikovsky: Shards of Earth (The Final Architecture #1) (2021)

Fun and exciting

A great read. It's not big on the science but the plot and characters are fantastic. The action scenes are well handled. There are some times the pacing seems a bit slow and people just sit around waiting for the next event to occur, but besides that thoroughly enjoyed.

Nicci French: The favour (‎Simon & Schuster UK)

When Liam unexpectedly turns up in Jude’s life after ten years of no contact, asking …

Creepy and compelling

A woman gets tangled up in a murder and with the suspect's lives. The first Nicci French book where the police aren't incompetent. Very well written, creepy and compelling writing.

Philip Pullman, Christopher Wormell: The Secret Commonwealth (2020, Penguin Books, Limited)

Fabulous continuation of alternative earth adventure

Beautifully and compelling written adventure with so many highs and lows, daring escapes and ripping yarns. The magisterium sub-plot is a bit dull and there's a bit of hand waving to make the plot keep moving, but still very excellent.

Joe R. Lansdale: More Better Deals (Hardcover, 2020, Mulholland Books)

East Texas crime story

Another East Texas gothic crime story. Set in the 50s, things start out slow then spiral into violence, murder and horror. It's all told in Lansdale's usual understated but vivid prose.
