Guerric Haché reviewed Karen Memory by Elizabeth Bear (Karen Memory, #1)

I really enjoyed this book - it was a great adventure with some alternate history and steampunk elements, written from the perspective of a character with a really folksy, Old West sort of dialect. I found the use of dialect in the narration charming, the cast of diverse and generally nice characters was great, and I really enjoyed the romantic subplot in the book. I may have vocally squeaked once or twice as things progressed.
If I'm dinging a point off, it's partly because the structure of narrative delivery occasionally felt jumbled on a paragraph-to-paragraph level. There were a few times when fast-paced action was interrupted by long reminiscences of past situations, where paragraphs seemed to be mixed out of order, and there were a few descriptions or phrasings that weren't really followed up on in a way that felt conclusive. There were also so many side characters that some of them blurred together, particularly many of the other working girls who lived alongside Karen, and the Madame who ran their parlour was built up to be a more interesting character than she turned out to be.
But overall, this was a really fun steampunk adventure with a sweet romance and a unique voice, and I was on board all the way through. Definitely give it a go!
