Philip William Stover: The Problem With Perfect (Paperback, Herabooks) 3 stars

A typical romcom so you know the basic tropes, city versus country, opposites attract, career versus quality. On the other hand whereas 20 years ago I’d only have found such novels in LGBT bookstores now they are available in mainstream stores. Even with today’s “Christian” nationalist and right wing backlash there is far more available than there ever was when I was growing up.

Everina Maxwell: Ocean's Echo (EBook, 2022, Tor Books, Tom Doherty Associates, Macmillan Publishing Group) 4 stars

Ocean's Echo is a stand-alone space adventure about a bond that will change the fate …

I have loved both of Everina Maxwell’s books. The world building they have created through subtle references is a multifaceted nuance of competing powers. Though the principle relationships are homosexual the magic of this universe is the complete absence of struggle. Where gender identity is a personal thing and people have the ability to control how much they share. Politics and power dynamics remain but in a world where being LGBT just isn’t a factor, isn’t a struggle.

Brilliant second novel

5 stars

The second novel from Everina Maxwell is just as delightful as the first. She builds a complex world with a background of competing factions and layers of politics.

One of the things I really love is that homosexual and heterosexual relationships are viewed the same and gender identity is just something personal and people can control the level they share. Huge strides have been made for #LGBTQ progress but from growing up in a world where you are still treated as other to seeing one where it is not even a concern is a subtle but poignant paradigm shift.

If you like Becky Chambers then definitely read Everina Maxwell!

A really engaging read, I started one night when I was having trouble sleeping and then demolished it in 4 days.

Exploring how the minor actions of one person can have dramatic impacts on another.

While I do have to say Under The Whispering Door and The House In The Cerulean Sea are better novels this is still a captivating tale and like his other novels an exploration of love and connection. A heartwarming read and I’m looking forward to his releases for 2024.
