5 stars! This book should be required reading for every American. Mekhennet is a German correspondent for the Washington Post, and a Muslim woman of Turkish and Moroccan descent who was raised in a mostly secular home. Her unusual background has given her access to interview high-ranking ISIS and Al Qaeda operatives (at risk of great personal danger, obviously), and she presents a unique perspective on how these people and their followers become radicalized -- and what we can do to prevent terrorism by changing that outcome, especially when it comes to young men living in Europe. As she writes in the epilogue, "The world is not facing a clash of civilizations or cultures, but a clash between those who want to build bridges and those who would rather see the world in polarities, who are working hard to spread hatred and divide us." The epilogue also presents a surprising twist that I won't spoil.
