This post WW2 book was one of the best books I read all year. A young girl goes through her first crush, and in the carnage afterward, learns about loyalty and disillusionment as she sees her parents for what they really are for the first time. She loses her innocence and gains some resolve, and in the background is the true story of the pillaging by American soldiers of art stolen by the Nazis from the Jews. The story ends on a note of kindness, and we see that in the big world of cheaters, liars, and assholes, there is some kindness, forgiveness and growth.
