The characters are great, and the conceit around the central murder (who/why/howdunnit) is convincing and interesting, but there is too much other stuff going on, much of it patently ludicrous. Time and time again, characters take absurdly stupid actions obviously doomed to failure, while the author provides zero explanation, simply pretending the actions make sense. The pointless fake abduction plot is only the most egregious example of this. I was sad not to like this as much as 1979, but it’s still a fun read overall.
