Mercè Rodoreda, Martha Tennent: Death in Spring (Hardcover, 2009, Open Letter)

Review of 'Death in Spring' on 'Goodreads'

More concentrated than most magical realism. Maybe more like an extended Symbolist poem. While Shirley Jackson is often mentioned as a thematic comparison, it’s closer in tone to the Ghormenghast trilogy, or Ishiguro’s The Unconsoled. If those touchstones sound appealing, then I’d recommend this short, intense, bleak and dreamy Catalan novel.
