This YA novel starts a bit clunky, but as the main characters gather at the mysterious Midwestern prep school campus that is the main setting, the story takes off in very exciting ways. As much science fiction as fantasy, this is a kind of junior Snow Crash. Lots of fun, with a breathtaking final sequence. I’m headed out to find the sequel. (I picked the book up because its author is one of the creators of Twin Peaks. It’s very different from that show in style, but an excellent adventure nonetheless.)
