This wasn't my cup of tea. Usually a big fan of apocalyptic fiction, I just couldn't finish this one.

The prose is colourful to the point of being purple - few things are blue if they can be azure, or black if they can be onyx. The main plot device may never be explained but jars of tomato sauce take on near holy significance, the difficulties of keeping a foreskin clean are explained in depth, and if something miserable happens it is described in gut wrenching misery porn detail.

For me the misery and inconsistent characterization were deal breakers. If that just sounds like gritty realism to you this could be just what you were looking for.
