This was a wonderfully written book. The world is rich and detailed and I learned a lot I hadn't known about the Civil War.

Sadly it is also dated, and the story is ultimately pointless. Or felt that way. I think if I'd read this in the 90's I would have enjoyed it more, but reading this book with a modern eye was a disappointing experience.
The main character, Jeff, falls in love with Annie, a young woman having General Lee's dreams. (While Lincoln's dreams are mentioned there is no clear reason why the book is titled 'Lincoln's Dreams'.) Annie was dating his old roomate, her psychiatrist, when they meet but Jeff steals her away for her own good. Annie appears completely passive in this, and nearly all other circumstances as well. This is a major reason I was so disappointed in the work, and why it was difficult to like either of the mains.

Their travels give opportunity for some good history lessons but other than a fuzzy analogy of Jeff as Traveller to Annie's Lee, no message or strong theme arises from any of it.
