Aside from being a Very Good dystopian novel, the surprises in the plot make this an exceptional read. The heroic characters in this tale are few, but mighty; clearly dogs take a leading part. If you decide to recommend this to YAs be certain youthful readers are cognizant of violence (self-preservation), gender and mortality topics.
