There isn't much I can say that hasn't already been said, probably the definitive text on the operation of the nazi's Final Solution for Europe's Jews. Meticulous and depressing but written in a clear and concise way I found it simultaneously hard to read and difficult to put down. Hard because of the subject matter not because its a bad book and compelling because of the detail Hilberg musters.

Hillberg said of writing the book;

"No literature could serve me as an example. The destruction of the Jews was an unprecedented occurrence, a primordial act that had not been imagined before it burst forth. The Germans had no model for their deed, and I did not have one for my narrative."

What he produced is well structured as well as dense with detail, its a must read for anyone with a serious interest in not only the Holocaust but how an atrocity of such scale can come into being.
