"Hand an sich legen" will sich nicht als Verteidigung des Suizids verstehen. Aber ich würde es eine Verteidigung des Suizidanten nennen. Es ist als Diskurs einzigartig, insofern dass es zur Empathie mit Suizidalen aufruft, ohne die Prämisse dass es das Ziel sein muss, sie "auf den richtigen Weg zu bringen". Améry nimmt die Ideen ernst, ohne sie gut zu heißen oder zu verurteilen.
Meine Hauptkritik ist, dass die blumige und häufig um sich selbst kreisende Prosa den Text schwer verdaulich macht und häufig die intendierten Aussagen verschleiert. Améry füllt ausserdem gelegentlich Lücken in seinem Diskurs mit No-True-Scotsman Argumenten auf, indem er Umstände die ihm nicht passen als "nicht echten Suizid" deklariert.
Insgesamt ist das Buch lesenswert. Ich habe es das Erste mal in meiner Jugend gelesen, auf Empfehlung meines Philosophielehrers. Beim zweiten Lesen fiel mir vor allem auf, wie nachhalting es meine Ansichten zu dem Thema geformt hat.

It is hard to talk about why this book is good without spoiling it.
It is a story about how we project our expectations and ideals unto other people, how that prevents us from seeing them as they are and how that is not a healthy way to have relationships.
And if you don't know why that makes for a good story, you'll just have to read the book - because it really is just that good.
