Allen Carr: Allen Carr's Easy Way to Stop Smoking (Paperback, 2001, Arcturus Publishing)

A Simple Proposition, Carrying Baggage

The proposition of this book is this simple: You are not 'giving up' anything by quitting smoking, and if you fully internalize that idea, then quitting can be easy. You are reclaiming the freedom, self-esteem, and discipline that a drug addiction has taken from you. That is an occasion for joy and celebration, rather than anxiety, panic, and depression.

It titles the chapters in such a way that it can be referenced easily as you encounter issues when quitting. I think I will keep it handy for when my chosen day comes.

Unfortunately it's skeptical of methods like NRT, anti-depressants, and anti-smoking programs sponsored by governments and medical professionals. Carr is clear about why he's against these things, but I am deeply skeptical of someone who styles themselves as an anti-establishment rebel who holds the sole keys to my liberation, and even more skeptical when they do so by making serious claims without citations.

The book belabors its points heavily, I assume to get you to internalize its core message, but the style also reminds me of preachers and used car salesmen.

That said, the book's overall message rings true... So I can't hate it too much.
