I must admit, I saw the superb 1960s film adaptation with Gregory Peck well before I read the book. But I had been aware of the books reputation and it's much loved status; it was just a book I hadn't "gotten round to" yet.

I now regret how long it took me to finally start this book. It really is a wonderful, richly drawn and warmly written story. Harper Lee is obviously a great observer of human nature, and every single character (without exception) in the book is believable and interesting. Lee manages to weave a beautiful and engaging story which manages to be both humorous and thought provoking, and truly captures the loss of childhood innocence. The narrative is supberb, and the clever mixture of perspective of 6 year old Scout with the reflections of her older self works very well.

This is an exceptional book and deserves it's reputation. I whole heartedly recommend it.
