Wow and WTF? This book defies a rating. It is either straight up 5 stars or it is 1. I cannot split the difference and say, okay 3 stars because 3 stars is a namby pamby rating and this ain't no namby pamby book that's for sure.

Just as I finished this book a line of lyric from The Mars Volta song Cassandra Gemini came to me. "There is no light in the darkest of your furthest reaches" and that could be the whole review in a nutshell. Never heard of The Mars Volta? Self indulgent prog rockers out of El Paso by way of LA? Defunct now, but no matter. Here is the song, all 32 minutes and some seconds of glory and pain, beauty and despair.

Give it a listen. Be forewarned. It's not for the faint of heart or one with a short attention span. If you can get through the song and say you enjoyed it or at least found it interesting, then you will be able to read this book to the end. Then, like me, you are a weirdo who likes their beauty tossed and befouled amongst the depraved and the ugly. Another lyric from the same song.
Bring me to my knees
Read the sharpened lines all my arms
Bled me blind.
I could go on but listen for yourself. Then read the book. Or not.
