Fun characters. Bit too much telling and not showing on their backstories--but probably a good choice to keep the story moving forward.
Checkov's tank?

The heist was good fun

Dennis E. Taylor: Heaven’s River (Paperback, 2021, Ethan Ellenberg Literary Agency)

More than a hundred years ago, Bender set out for the stars and was never …

Finally dug into questions of identity--what makes a person? The lens gets wider as the Bobs argue amongst themselves and the universe splinters into more divergent views

New alien species was interesting. Nothing groundbreaking...but enjoyable

In The Aeneid, Vergil's hero fights to claim the king's daughter, Lavinia, with whom he …

Imaginative viewpoint on the end of the Aeniad. I liked the main character--imperfect but strong and independent.

Loving detail on the rituals of the Latins and their neighbors.

Claire Andrews: Daughter of Sparta (Hardcover, 2021, Little, Brown, and Company)

Pacing was very uneven--last 1/3 of the book was almost an outline

Daphne was a bit too cliche in her struggle between loving and hating the bad boy in her life. And she spent too much time thinking about bad boy instead of getting on with saving with world.

Author had a funny tick of all her characters digging their nails into things, mostly their palms

Erika Swyler: Light from Other Stars (Hardcover, 2019, Bloomsbury Publishing)

Review of 'Light from Other Stars' on 'Goodreads'

Written by someone who is still a little too bitter about the way very smart girls are treated in life. Genius chemist Mom has to forgo a career because....why? Plot point?

The book is not really sci-fi. I think it is more about how we spend time. Maybe about time and touch? It is a good meditation on this...perhaps better than taking a local bus in the wrong direction (I'm looking at you, Camus).

Time bubbles form in different sizes and shapes why?

I loved the description of how the AI perceives shifts in visual processing--fascinating concept of reality splintering into boxes. The AI's voice is at once synthetic and very much like an 8 year old girl. Does the Sun heal Josie? Not clear.

The human trade-offs and impacts of genetically (?) enhanced human intelligence are examined through mostly relate-able and well-developed characters.
