Caitlín R. Kiernan: The Red Tree (2010) 3 stars

Review of 'The Red Tree' on 'Goodreads'

3 stars

Great, atmospheric story told from the unfinished manuscript of a troubled, haunted soul; it's all about guilt, pain, and loneliness, and the attempt to make sense of inexplicable events. But after reading about half of it I began to realize I probably wouldn't find enough keys to make sense of all the puzzles and dreams. Their purpose, it seems to be, is to permanently hint at some deeper level of the story for the reader to explore. Unfortunately I didn't manage to form a coherent story out of it all, and that, in the end, made it a mildly frustrating experience.
