Entertaining Sequel

I like how the narrative changes perspective to another primary character in this volume. The story is an exciting development from the first novel. I can’t help but feel that Thompson’s writing style is not always to my taste. I think he tends to sometimes skip very hastily through some of the most crucial points of the story. This leaves me with a feeling of “is it really over just like that?”

This second novel takes opportunities here and there to explain details I know from the first novel. It’s as if the author wants readers to be able to enjoy the story without having read the first novel. I think it might work. It is just not really necessary when you’ve just read the first novel. Luckily, it is not really annoying either.

Captivating sci-fi with many interesting ideas that work really well. It was especially interesting for me to read a story in a quite different setting from what I am used to - Nigeria. The novel both rounds the story off nicely and sets us up for more in the next volume which I cannot wait to read now.

Captivating dystopia

I have not watched the TV series based on the book before reading it. I prefer it in that order. I was caught up in the story from the first few pages. It describes a dystopian future regime in the former United States with very strict rules and control and abundant capital punishment for those who step a bit out of line. The story has chilling similarities to some of what I read about present-day conservative America.

I just learned about the trilogy of which this is the first book from @yabellini@fosstodon.org's post. Reading about the plot gives me associations to Cixin Liu's Remembrance of Earth's Past trilogy. I think I need to start this one when I am done with The Handmaid's Tale.
