A very intellectual novel making a profound point that, so far at least, is just beyond my comprehension.

De stad en zijn onvaste muren is gebaseerd op een kort verhaal dat Murakami in 1980 schreef en dat in een tijdschrift is verschenen. In 1985 gebruikte hij dat verhaal in de roman Hard-boiled Wonderland en het einde van de wereld. Maar nog steeds niet tevreden gebruikte hij dat verhaal opnieuw in 2020 om De stad en zijn onvaste muren te schrijven.
Het zorgde er bij mij voor dat ik de eerste 150 bladzijden het gevoel had een boek te lezen wat ik al eens gelezen had. Gelukkig werd het na het eerste deel beter. Ondanks een stroef begin toch nog een verrassend einde met typische Murakami elementen als katten, de maan, oorlelletjes en muziek.
This novel retells a story Murakami explored first as a short story and not long after as one of his early novels. This is a more mature and more meaningful telling of the story with his typical magical realism in fine form packing in bizarre and tender elements.
