The old shepherd, with his battered hat and shapeless jacket, is now to be replaced by Athanase, a more charming figure who is a perfect foil and occasional straight man to the other creatures of the mountains. The series of menacing women continues - a carnivorous sphinx, a muscular and formidable shepherdess, and a German tourist who reduces Romuald to a quivering jelly.
