An enormous disappointment. Couldn’t actually bring myself to finish the last couple hours of this tape. Read almost any 1- or 2-star review here and I agree with all their criticisms entirely. Definitely going to be a competitor for my worst read of 2019, alongside “God Save Texas.” Avoid this book at all cost, it’s essentially a grapeshot load of family history that follows no coherent narrative pattern mixed with a gimmicky “letter to the child I never had” epistolary format in some sections. After 7 hours, I literally learned nothing and couldn’t even keep straight the dozens of names she threw together in every paragraph.
