What looked like wooly hair in ancient Egyption depictions [Samuel George] Morton deems wigs worn by Egyptians over their real hair, which surely was straight and light-colored, like that of "the fairest Europeans of the present day." (Why Egyptians would wear wooly-haired wigs does not rate an explanation.)
