Review of 'Down and Out in Paris and London' on 'Goodreads'
4 stars
I last read this book about 35 years ago and still had a vivid memory of his description of the contrast between the kitchens and dining rooms of Paris restaurants. The books is masterfully written and communicates the reality of poverty in a gripping manner. It underlines the absolute necessity of the welfare state and the abhorrence of concepts such as the deserving and undeserving poor, which is still prevelent today. Unfortunately his anti-Semitism jars the experience. Nevertheless, well worth the re-read.
