When a woman is found hanged, an apparent suicide, Erlendur grows curious about what led up to her death. Because it appears cut-and-dried, he pursues his curiosity unofficially, and while he's at it he revisits some unsolved missing persons cases. This entry in the series is, as usual, low-keyed and subtle, with a deceptively simple surface that conceals many layers. An excellent book, so long as you aren't expecting car chases, deviant serial killers, or explosions. Instead, Arnaldur sets off depth charges that resonate deep inside.
