The first in the Hanne Wilhelmsen mystery series, though published in English after 1222 (quite late in the series), this one is not really focused on Hanne, and for me this was a flaw. There were at least three protagonists, and Hanne was less the focus than the other two, a defense lawyer and a prosecutor, both nicely drawn characters but ... I guess I prefer stories with a more singular narrative focus. In this story, a lawyer stumbles over a body, then is hired by a man who appears to be the murderer, a terrified Dutchman who refused to speak. Once she figures out why he wanted her as his lawyer, she's in a bit of a bind, because she needs the prosecution to solve a case, but she can't give them key information unless her client says so. As with Anne Holt's other stories, this one has a complex plot that pulls in many well-drawn characters, a touch of conspiracy theory, and moments when only coincidence can save the day. Not my favorite of her books, but I'm glad I read it.
