Long but immersive

Engrossingly written, this is a character piece, not a mystery, even if it dresses up in mystery's clothing. I enjoyed some perspectives more than others; we hop around timelines unnecessarily. But the setting and characters are both drawn with vivid clarity. Some readers were dissatisfied with an aspect of the plot I won't go into, but I thought it was fitting – it makes sense for a literary novel if not for a satisfying mystery.
