book-owl commented on Billy Summers by Stephen King
Steve, Steve. Can't stop writing about yourself in your novels, can you?
I picked up this book because I wanted something easy and immersive. King didn't disappoint - as always, he's able to get you right into the heart of things, into the mind of the protagonist. He knows what words to use and when to make you feel like you're there, to get in character... but he can't let go of himself. Once again the main character ends up being an author. Once again he transitioning through the book. When toward the end of the book the writing shifting from third person to first person (because now the main character writes as things happen), I gave up and put the book away.
King couldn't get away from politics and his opinions of Trump in this one, or how he feels toward women (his guilt seems to bleed through the pages). It feels more like I'm reading King's own thoughts than a story, though, it IS a good story. Just too bad he couldn't exit his own orbit.
Good potential, bad performance.
