Oyinkan Braithwaite: My Sister, the Serial Killer (2018)

When Korede's dinner is interrupted one night by a distress call from her sister, Ayoola, …

Do you ever read a book where the main characters seem better than the book is worth? Korede and Ayoola are interesting characters with a lot bubbling under the surface, much of it implied but never quite picked up on by others. One of these things is that Ayoola is a serial killer and Korede reluctantly helps her cover up her crimes.

This is a fun premise, but dear god this book was predictable. If, at any point while reading, you write down a list of "most likely things to happen  to ramp up tension," the book does not deviate from that list. Sometimes this is fine, but when you have a thriller about a serial killer you expect some sort of twist should pop up.

The relationships between the various characters are fleshed out in quite a lot of detail--again, more than it's worth, I think--but the characters themselves mostly suck. It's actually kind of remarkable how many people are gigantic a-holes to Korede and bow before the beautiful feet of Ayoola. It gets very tiresome very quickly.

I think many people would find this book interesting, but I was mostly bored. When the climactic moment happened I thought "oh, finally." Even with how quickly I read it, I feel better about finishing it than I did at any moment in the process.
