brenticus reviewed Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer

This book has a very interesting, and very important, perspective. The idea that plants are just as important as people, that nature is just as important as civilization, has become increasingly obvious as the climate crisis advances. But more than that, the idea that proper stewardship of the planet requires us to be actively involved with nature is interesting. Often we focus our efforts on leaving nature alone as much as possible, yet, as an example, sweetgrass can't flourish without being picked by basket weavers. Our active participation is necessary, we just need to be respectful and grateful and stop destroying everything for the sake of industry.
This book is wonderfully written, and Kimmerer's stories are almost all really interesting for one reason or another. There's even legit gardening tips. My only major complaint is that it's so slow to read. It begs for reflection, for consideration, but it also keeps coming back to the same topics, but also sometimes moves on suddenly. The pacing makes it tricky to read for an extended period, which isn't inherently bad but at the time I was trying to read it the experience felt poorer because of it.
Regardless, I wholeheartedly recommend this book. It's a wonderful perspective on our relationship with nature and it should be mandatory reading for anyone looking to open a new oil well.
