chayote reviewed Misrule by Heather Walter (Malice Duology, #2)

Misrule serves as a decent conclusion to the story begun in Malice, but it didn't hold the same charm, nor did it keep me as engaged as Malice. While it was interesting and gratifying to see Alyce revel in her power and create a court that was better and fairer and a home for those creatures cast out and persecuted in other parts of the world, I struggled with the book feeling somewhat directionless and indecisive for a section of the middle. There was a lot of back and forth of relationships with several of the characters, some of which felt necessary to explore the ultimate themes, but it started to feel tiresome and repetitive. I did enjoy the conclusion, and the writing continues to be very readable, but I found myself frustrated that after 100 years, Alyce seems to be the same kid with the same insecurities and no new skills for dealing with interpersonal relationships. Overall an enjoyable read and a satisfying conclusion, but fell just a bit short of what I'd hoped it'd be.
