Chris reviewed King Solomon's mines by Henry Rider Haggard (Modern Library classics)

I read this mainly because Rider Haggard lived a few streets away from here (1885-8). It really does betray the imperialist attitudes of its era in every line; the idea that Black people are there for the use and convenience of Whites. I also find that Mahatma Gandhi lived in the vicinity in the same period, while he was a law student (1888-91); I wonder if they ever met. It would not have been a good-natured meeting, I am sure. Is there an idea for a story in this?
