Media circus long before the WWW was a thing, and a theme taken up by several movies since - what would happen if non-human or otherwise not-what-we-expected life was found, and would they become an alien zoo for us to fight wars over. I think I read this while staying with my aunt and uncle in Sussex, quite advanced for the local library to have a copy of this book.
