Unique dark fantasy
5 stars
At once both beautiful and brutal, the world and characters of The Fifth Season are magical enough to let you hope for the best but dark enough to take that hope away, too. The characters are complex and vibrant, and even when they aren't likeable, they're always compelling. This is definitely dark fantasy, but it's the kind of dark fantasy that uses its tragic elements to make its lighter elements, like love and hope, even stronger.
