I enjoyed Major Pettigrew so had high hopes for this novel. I was not disappointed. I love how the author makes characters of all ages valid and vivid. It's a light read, the tragedies are softened and the romance is inevitable (like Jane Austen.) But that is not a criticism. The book holds life in gentle regard and I enjoy that most of all.
