I actually found myself kind of moved by the end of this story. I’m not sure if that’s the quality of the narrator or what! (since I did listen to this as audiobook)
This was a perfect fit for my readable-but-serious type of read. There isn’t a lot of snark/banter here, but it’s also largely a fun SF adventure.
While it is fun, I thought the reflections on war and the actions we justify during war for the “right” side was nuanced. There was no answer to “what’s the right thing to do? How do we fix what we did?” So I loved the relationship between Low and the General.
This book suffered with the minor characters. There were too many and they did not feel distinct to me. I really didn’t care about their fates as much as I did the General and Low, so I could have enjoyed it more if it were a more focused story.
Because I listened to this as audiobook, I also found the drawl of some characters really tiring. I’m sure it’s written that way so the narrator read it that way, but it just grated on me.
The book is pitched as Firefly and Dune, but I’d say Firefly and Fury Road is the better description.
