I didn’t plan on reading this in one day, but here we are!

I’ve long credited The Giver with making me a reader as a kid/teen. I think I must’ve reread it in my 20s, so this is probably my 3rd time reading it. There are certain scenes I had strong memories of before picking this back up, but also other things I completely forgot.

This was interesting to read so soon after The Dispossessed by LeGuin. There are aspects of this dystopian utopia that actually sound pretty good. With the exception of enforced “release,” how they treat their elderly is a huge improvement over us. And I think a lot of folks these days would say, hey, it’s worth the cost in order to have a survivable life. But I don’t think that was the vibe in the 90s
